Neighborhood Guide: Lower Pacific Heights
My family and I have called Lower Pacific Heights home since 2021 when we moved one block south from Pacific Heights. The area bordered by Presidio Street and Van Ness from west to east and California Street to Geary Street from north to south was once known as Upper Fillmore or Western Addition.
The historical and colorful Victorian homes that line the streets of Lower Pac Heights are home to many families like ours and long-time residents who have seen the neighborhood change over the decades. We appreciate the friendliness and walkability of our neighborhood and its proximity to parks and other amenities.
An easy walk, Fillmore Street is the heart of Lower Pac Heights, where you can browse boutiques, grab a bite and a drink, or catch a live music show at The Fillmore or The Boom Boom Room. Japantown is a historical area in Lower Pac Heights full of Japanese restaurants, shopping, and more than a few karaoke venues. It’s also home to the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in April and Cottage Row, a group of six historical Victorian homes built in the late 1800s.
Lifestyle: A walker’s paradise, everything you need is within a short distance. If you’re commuting downtown, you’ll have a straight shot by bus or car. You’ll find young professionals, families, and residents who have lived in the neighborhood for decades and can share its history. Large condo buildings are scattered throughout the neighborhood.
The Market: A mix of single-family Victorian homes and many that were converted to condos over the years.
The Outdoors: The relatively flat streets (by SF standards) are great for exploring the neighborhood. Two mini-parks are in the area (Bush + Broderick and Cottage Row) and two city parks with playgrounds are within walking distance. The Presidio is nearby and offers 24 miles of trails.
For Families: Lower Pacific Heights may be in the middle of The City but has a great sense of community. Many young families put down roots in the neighborhood and raise their children here. With parks, libraries, and ice cream shops there are plenty of places to meet for a playdate.
The History: Lower Pac Heights has a rich cultural history. Explore the historical jazz destination, The Fillmore then head to Japantown just a few blocks away.
